About the Role

We're looking for a Senior AI/ML Engineer to lead the contextual intelligence of PONS - mastering how large language models (LLMs) understand and reason over legal documents, cases, and jurisdictions to deliver reliable, verifiable outputs for lawyers. This is a hands-on role focused on advanced context engineering, where you'll design and optimize the full prompt + retrieval + reasoning stack that powers our legal AI workspace.

You'll work closely with product, engineering, and legal experts to turn complex legal use cases into high-precision AI features.

Key Responsibilities

  • • Design and optimize advanced context engineering strategies, including prompt structures, system instructions, few-shot examples, chain-of-thought, and dynamic context assembly for legal reasoning tasks
  • • Build and refine Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines tailored to legal documents, case law, regulations, and jurisdiction-specific knowledge to ensure accurate, grounded responses
  • • Implement techniques for hallucination reduction, output verifiability, citation provenance, and context-aware reliability in production LLM systems
  • • Collaborate with product and frontend teams to integrate LLM capabilities into the PONS workspace, focusing on speed, token efficiency, cost control, and seamless user experience
  • • Monitor and evaluate real-world LLM performance on legal edge cases, set up observability for prompts/contexts/outputs, and iterate based on user feedback and metrics
  • • Stay ahead of LLM advancements in context management, agentic workflows, long-context handling, and evaluation frameworks - propose experiments to keep PONS at the forefront of legal AI

Required Experience

  • • 5+ years of hands-on experience building and optimizing LLM-powered applications in production environments
  • • Deep expertise in context engineering techniques: prompt engineering, RAG, retrieval strategies, chain-of-thought, tool use, and multi-turn conversation management
  • • Strong proficiency with LLM APIs and ecosystems, frameworks, and evaluation tools for reliability and accuracy
  • • Experience shipping LLM features in SaaS products, ideally in document-intensive or regulated domains
  • • Understanding of data privacy, bias mitigation, explainability, and compliance considerations critical to legal AI applications
  • • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous legal requirements into robust, context-optimized LLM solutions

What We Offer

  • • Competitive salary and meaningful equity
  • • Flexible remote-friendly work across European time zones
  • • Direct ownership over the contextual AI layer
  • • Fast-moving roadmap with access to the latest LLMs, evaluation tools, and experimentation freedom
  • • Collaborative, high-trust team environment in a purpose-driven legal tech company

How to Apply
